Give me a raise!

One of the best perks of working on the South Bank is being able to "walk the bridges" over lunch.  I get an up close and personal view of the Jacksonville skyline and on occasion, I catch a group of dolphins playing along the river walk.

Friday, as I embarked on my normal trek, my train of thought was suddenly interrupted by blaring sirens. I looked around and noticed a group of sail boats approaching. They were going to raise the bridge!

Now I've long known that the Main Street bridge is a "vertical lift" bridge and I've impatiently waited in my car as the boats passed through, delaying my crossing.  But I have never been ON the bridge as it was raised.

Bridge attendants dressed in neon vests encouraged me to wait on the "observation deck" ( I guess the bridge architects always planned for spectators) and I waved back enviously at the boat passengers as they drifted by and I snapped a few pics.

In short, the bridge raising was a welcome interruption in my walk and I hope one day it could be for you as well.  Just another cool little thing to appreciate about out city. (On a side note, If anyone knows what these people are doing right to be sailing on my work day, please contact me via the "Contact Me" box below.)

It's actually pretty AWESOME

I've always liked Jacksonville; but you know, in a hometown kind of way. I grew up here, my family's here, I love the beach. But then about 3 years ago I moved back to Jacksonville from LA. And about 3 months after that, it hit me; I don't just like Jacksonville- I love Jacksonville!

As a 20 something in Jacksonville I can live the beach lifestyle and still have a career. When I wake up in the morning and start my commute downtown, I catch stunning views of the sun rising over the intracoastal and St. Johns River. Whatever tickles my fancy really, be it concerts, football games, arts markets, museums, outdoor rec leagues, water sports (you get the point), all this and more can be found in Jacksonville. Each neighborhood boasts its own vibe and I am excited to live in a place where you can feel the energy bubbling. Jacksonville is on the horizon of great change and I am happy to be a part of it.

So that said, this blog is dedicated to Jacksonville: the people, the scenery, the culture and everything else that makes it great, through my eyes, as I live it.
